About

Anneliese Shapiro

When I paint I find myself returning to the landscapes that establish my sense of place -- the grounding provided by familiar fields, foothills and mountains These landscapes are touchstones in my daily commutes and the seasonal road trips I take across our state. Each is painted based on a view that struck me in a very specific location and season. Visitors to these places might find them unremarkable but they have become beautiful to me because they form my visual perimeter. They mark my position as I travel and signal when I return home.

I draw my inspiration primarily from Utah landscapes but also love those of our neighboring states. While I love to paint "plein air," I work most of the time in my studio with my road trip and hiking photos as a reference.
