About

Tamia Wardle

I interpret the natural world (especially Utah) through relief printmaking. My artwork is not a direct representation, but an interpretation through color, lines, and the “chatter” made by the cuts in the substrate left by my carving tools. The altered compositions are my response to how I observe the world around me.

After a long career as a graphic designer, I switched pursuits to concentrate on my favorite art form: relief printmaking. Printmaking is a multi-step process. My process starts with a sketch in my sketchbook. I transfer that sketch to linoleum, wood or another substrate, and then the image is carved to create a relief. The relief is inked and the image is transferred to paper using the pressure from burnishing with a wooden spoon. I do not use a press. Although carving the artwork is my favorite part of the process, I love all of the steps it takes to create my final prints.
